If government is for sale, the obvious solution is to reduce the power politicians have to grant favors in the first place. Instead, Gavin's solution is always more subsidies, more regulations, more redistribution, more discretion, and more political control. In other words, more things worth lobbying for. The problem isn't merely that government is for sale. It's that government possesses so much power that buying influence is profitable. This is not sustainable. Plutarch warned us 2,000 years ago that the imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics. We have got to democratize our economy so that it works for all.

Bernie's argument quietly assumes Social Security is welfare rather than insurance. Does Elon receive Social Security benefits proportional to his income? No. That's why the tax is capped. Remove the cap while keeping benefits capped and you've admitted the goal is redistribution, not retirement insurance. At least be honest about it.

The American ideal was never equality of outcome. It was the freedom to rise as far as your ability, ambition, and voluntary exchange could take you. Warren sees a trillion dollars and asks how much should be confiscated. I see a trillion dollars and ask what was created to make it possible.

Social Security should either be grandfathered out or made voluntary through an opt out provision. If people genuinely believe it's a great investment, they should have no objection to letting others choose for themselves. The uncomfortable reality is that, as an investment, it's difficult to find many alternatives with a lower long term return. Most people could likely achieve better results through decades of private saving and investing than by relying on a political system that taxes current workers to pay current retirees. The strongest argument for Social Security has never been that it's a great investment. It's that many people would not save at all. That may be an argument for paternalism. It is not an argument that the investment itself is particularly good.

I find the idea of an American communist revolution amusing. It is generally proposed by people who assure us they cannot afford groceries, housing, healthcare, transportation, or adulthood without government assistance. Yet we are expected to believe that immediately after the revolution they will competently reorganize agriculture, industry, transportation, energy production, supply chains, and the entire economy. The revolution is apparently the one task they are uniquely qualified for. The morning after, however, remains suspiciously unexplained.

The people who describe a tax cut as a government "cost" reveal more than they intend. A cost to whom? The money belonged to the taxpayer before the government ever laid claim to it. Calling a tax cut a cost assumes that your income already belongs to the state and that allowing you to keep more of it is somehow an expense. It's the language of ownership. The taxpayer is treated not as a citizen with rights, but as a source of revenue to be managed, harvested, and milked.

Corporate welfare should be eliminated. But corporate welfare is a fraction of what is spent on entitlement and anti poverty programs. And despite the constant rhetoric, high earners already pay the overwhelming majority of income taxes. The government didn't accumulate tens of trillions in debt because it was too busy handing money to billionaires. It accumulated tens of trillions in debt because politicians discovered that promising benefits is easier than paying for them. The real welfare state isn't for corporations. It's the one so large that even confiscatory taxes on the rich wouldn't come close to funding everything it promises.

Communists often try to defeat calm persuasion with loud, passionate assertion because the appeal isn't primarily to reason, but to emotion. The goal is not to demonstrate that a claim is true, but to make disagreement feel immoral through guilt. When persuasion fails, volume, outrage, and moral condemnation become substitutes for evidence.

We are told labor creates everything and employers create nothing. If labor alone created wealth, every town full of workers would be crowded with thriving businesses, and bankruptcy would be as rare as modesty in politics. Yet the odd thing is that labor seems to require tools, buildings, machinery, investment, organization, customers, and someone willing to lose his shirt when the venture fails. The socialist sees a successful business and notices the workers. He sees a failed business and somehow forgets to credit them. Labor is important. The claim that it is all that matters collapses the moment a business fails despite having workers.
